Black Sapote Box (Pre-Order)

Diospyros nigra, commonly called Black Sapote, or Chocolate Pudding Fruit, is a delicious tropical fruit tree native to Mexico, Central America, and South America. Black Sapote is often times referred to as a Sapote, however it is actually a species of persimmon. Sapote in this context refers to any soft, edible fruit.

Black Sapote is an incredibly versatile fruit and is eaten in a number of creative ways. The fresh fruit is sliced in half and eaten with a spoon, after removing the seeds, as they are inedible and cannot be eaten. Removing the seeds with a spoon from the ripe, soft fruit is quick and easy, as there are only a few seeds and they are easy to locate.  Chocolate Pudding Fruit is also used to make vegan pancakes, ice Cream, as well as a number of different types of drinks, blends and smoothies.  Black Sapote is a solid stand-alone fruit; however, the options for use are virtually limitless, as the texture and delicious flavor of this rare tropical fruit pairs well with a plethora of culinary creations.

Our Chocolate Pudding Fruit is 100% organically grown right here in Miami, and we pick the fresh fruits from our own trees in late summer. Some of our fruits also come from local niche growers and collectors who embrace the same ethical and sustainable growing practices as we do.

Chocolate Pudding fruits are light green in color, and somewhat round in shape while they are on the tree. Like many other fruits, Black Sapote fruit never ripens while it is on the tree. Once the fruits are at their final stage of development, they are picked and allowed to ripen at room temperature for several days. The fruits are only ripe and ready to eat once they are shriveled and wrinkled in appearance. The fruit will arrive hard, however after a number of days (generally 3-8 days), the fruit will become soft to the touch. Unlike fruits you may be accustomed to, Chocolate Pudding fruit should be extremely soft before you cut into the fruit, as this is the natural composition of the ripe fruit. Don’t worry, it is likely not overripe.

To ensure that your Chocolate Pudding Fruits ripen correctly, keep them at room temperature and do not refrigerate unripe fruit, as this will permanently delay or suspend the natural ripening process.

Ripe fruit should be eaten or stored in a refrigerator for a couple days. Chocolate Pudding Fruit is often times frozen for use in blends and smoothies.
