Artocarpus heterophyllus, commonly known as Jackfruit is the world’s largest tree-borne fruit. The absurdly large, cylindrical fruit is covered with a thick rind which is naturally decorated with thousands of dull horns or spikes. To add to it’s already curious form, the fruit is generally a mix of light green, yellow, or orange with some dark splotches once mature. Jackfruit is native to India and West Africa and is the national fruit of Jamaica, though it is cultivated all throughout south Florida, Central America, east Asia, Hawaii, and many more places.  It is an exotic fruit grown in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and the tree is related to the fig, mulberry and breadfruit.  Ripe Jackfruit has an enthralling tropical flavor similar to mango and pineapple, along with many other flavors which are hard to describe. The fresh fruit emits a pungent, but pleasant sweet aroma, which is commonly described as being similar to that of Juicy Fruit chewing gum. The impressive fruit can weigh upwards of 60 pounds, though we tend to grow and ship more compact, flavorful varieties with excellent fruit texture and consistency. Our Jackfruit trees are NS1 variety; however, we supply a wide variety of equally delicious cultivars which are all guaranteed to leave quite an impression.

Jackfruit is a versatile fruit with hundreds of different uses; however, the most common way to consume Jackfruit is to eat the ripe pods of fresh fruit at the center of the fruit. Each pod is a fleshy, soft, crunchy segment of sweet fruit, and each fruit will contain dozens of these segments. Each segment contains a single nut or seed which should never be consumed raw, though it is perfectly delicious and edible once boiled or roasted adequately. Jackfruit seeds are loaded with protein and are often times boiled and salted for a nutritious meal, or used as a cooking ingredient in stir fries and other dishes. Green, unripe Jackfruit is also chopped and cooked as a vegetable in Indian, African, Caribbean and Asian cuisine. Jackfruit has also gained a lot of popularity in recent years, as world renown chefs and enthusiasts alike have successfully used this fruit as a meat substitute for vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Jackfruit is oftentimes used in smoothies and blends, as ripe fruit may also be refrigerated for short term, or frozen in airtight bags or containers for months of use once the seeds are removed.

Adding to the impressive features of Jackfruit, the fruit is an abundant source of vitamin C, vitamin A, riboflavin, potassium, magnesium, manganese and copper.

While the seeds cannot be consumed raw, and must be either roasted or boiled, each Jackfruit will contain upwards of 80 large oval seeds. Once cooked thoroughly, these seeds contain high amounts of protein, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. There are many recipes available which are centered around the use of Jackfruit seeds.

In order to determine when your Jackfruit is perfectly ripe and ready to cut, the spikes on the outside of the fruit will be soft and when the fruit is squeezed gently, it should give to applied pressure. The fruit will also emit a strong, sweet aroma as it ripens. It is better to wait until the fruit is ripe, because cutting the fruit too early may reduce the quality of your experience if you desire to eat the fresh fruit and do not intend to cook it. Jackfruit should be allowed to fully ripen at room temperature and should not be refrigerated until after it has fully ripened. Some Jackfruits will arrive ripe, although some may need a few days as each fruit is different.

Note: (fruit-latex allergy); if you have a latex allergy, consult your doctor before adding Jackfruit to your diet. Jackfruit, among other fruits containing natural latex should be avoided for people with latex related allergies.
