Mamey Sapote Box

$79
Size:

Pouteria sapote, popularly known as Mamey Sapote, is a fruit tree native to Mexico and Central America and it is widely cultivated across the Caribbean and south Florida. The Mamey fruit varies in size depending on cultivar; however, the fruits are generally quite large and can weigh upwards of 6 pounds.

The outer skin of the fruit is somewhat rough, and light to dark brown in color.  The flesh of the ripe fruit generally ranges from orange to red in color. The fruit is satiating as it is high in fiber, yet remarkably sweet, often likened to sweet potato pie, or pumpkin pie. The ripe fruit is often eaten alone with a spoon, as the fruit is soft, creamy and rich. Each fruit will contain a single, large, smooth, glossy black convex-shaped inedible seed which should be discarded. Larger sized fruits may contain two or three seeds, as these large fruits are actually a type of berry!

Mamey Sapote was first introduced to south Florida in the late 1800s, and has been cultivated throughout south Florida by farmers and enthusiasts ever since. While the ripe fruit is generally prized as a delicious raw fruit, it is also frequently blended to make fruit smoothies, and other tropical flavored drinks and desserts.

The skin and seed of the Mamey fruit are not edible; however, the fruit itself is abounding in nutrition. Each fruit is an excellent source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C, as well as potassium, niacin, manganese, riboflavin, and dietary fiber.

We personally grow multiple varieties of Mamey Sapote right here in Miami. Our trees are grown organically, without the use of any pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Other fruits we supply are sourced from local niche growers who embrace the same ethical and sustainable growing practices which we do.

In order to ensure that you enjoy your fruit, we strongly urge you to be patient and allow the fruit to become soft to the touch. There is nothing more disappointing than cutting into a big juicy Mamey Sapote, just to discover that is wasn’t quite ripe. Mamey Sapote fruits do not ripen on the tree naturally, and thus they are always picked from the tree once they are full size, and allowed to ripen slowly at room temperature for up to a week or two after picking. The fruit is ripe and ready to eat when it gives generously to a gentle squeeze. A ripe Mamey will appear wrinkly and soft like a well cooked sweet potato.  If the fruit seems only a little soft, but still hard in the center, allow the fruit to continue ripening for a couple more days. The fruit should be soft to the core before you cut it. It is better to wait an extra day, than it is to cut it a day too early. Ripe fruit may be frozen for months or stored in a refrigerator for a few days; but do not refrigerate unripe fruit as it will not ripen correctly. This sensational fruit is absolutely worth the wait! Enjoy!
