Carica papaya, commonly known as Papaya, is a delicious tropical fruit native to Mexico and northern South America. The Papaya has become naturalized throughout the tropics, and has been cultivated throughout the Caribbean and south Florida for decades.

The fruits vary in shape depending on variety. Some fruits are pear-shaped, while others are more convex in shape. Our ripe Papayas are picked just before they become soft on the tree, lending to optimal flavor and sugar content. Papayas are rich in vitamin A, folate and antioxidants. One single fruit provides an adult with more than 200% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C.

The skin of the Papaya fruit starts out green on the tree and gradually turns to a yellow or orange color when ripe. You will know that the Papaya fruit is ripe and ready to cut once the fruit feels somewhat soft to the touch. While green papayas are often cooked as a vegetable, ripe papayas should not be cut open until the fruit gives a little when squeezed gently. Each fruit is different, so it is best to allow time for the fruit to finish the last stage of ripening if your fruit does not feel soft to the touch. This can best be accomplished by allowing the fruit to remain at room temperature until ripe. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit as this will indefinitely suspend the ripening process. A ripe papaya will last about 4 days at room temperature, or about a week in a refrigerator. Any ripe, uneaten fruit should be refrigerated or frozen.

A common way to eat the fruit is to cut the papaya lengthwise, and pull the halves apart. The seeds are then scooped out with a spoon, and the fruit can be eaten with a spoon, or it can be sliced, discarding the skin.

Our Papayas are grown 100% organically without any use of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. We personally plant, and pick our own Papaya trees here in Miami. Some of our fruit is sourced locally from our partners and fellow growers, where similar growing practices are embraced.

Note:  While the seeds of the papaya fruit are generally considered edible, consult a doctor about this practice, as there have been studies with conflicting results.
