Sugar Cane Box
Saccharum officinarum, better known as Sugarcane, is a type of perennial grass which commonly grows to heights of 12 feet. Sugarcane is native to Southeast Asia where it has been farmed for over 4,000 years. The edible part of this remarkable plant are the thick stalks which account for 80% of all of the world’s produced sugar. On an industrial scale, sugar is extracted from sugarcane at specialized factories. Other less technical processes involve the use of a manual or electric press, which squeezes the sugarcane flat, while collecting the resulting sugarcane juice.
However, many fruit enthusiasts who simply want to enjoy some delicious sugarcane are easily able to do so by simply cutting or tearing off the layer of husk which surrounds each stalk, and then cutting the inner section of the stalk in half or into more manageable strips, depending on the thickness of the stalk. Place the end of the cut section of sugarcane in your mouth and using your back teeth, carefully, but firmly, bite down on the cane while sucking the sugarcane juice from the stalk. The sugar is in the juice and the fiber of the sugarcane stalk itself is not consumed and is spit out and discarded.
Sugarcane is also commonly used to make delicious swizzle sticks for coffee, cocktails and fruit drinks, by cutting the stalk into long strips.
We grow and harvest some organic green sugarcane right here in Miami, while the majority of our sugarcane is sourced locally from partners and niche growers with similar ethical and sustainable growing practices. We offer both red and green varieties, both types make for an absolutely delicious and memorable experience.
